Unique remnant of cool-dry podocarp forest (kahikatea, matai, totara), at its best in the spring when the many kowhai are in bloom. The understorey is exceptionally rich in small-leaved divaricating plant species – 30, inculding korokio, poataniwha and weeping matipo. Take Mataroa Rd from sH1 north of Taihape. Over the swing bridge, a 5-min track leads upstream to a picnic area, and a 10-min no-exit track leads downstream.
