NZ’s most extensive remaining stands of kaikawaka (mountain cedar) grow in Hihitahi plateau. A 3-hr track to Zeke’s Hut (4 beds) at first climbs steeply through mid-altitude forest dominated by thin-bark totara and black maire; higher up, kaikawaka (some killed by possums) tower over a low canaopy of broadleaf, horopito and wineberry. Fine views of the plateau landscape and Ruapehu. A good place to see rifleman, NZ’s smallest bird. Acess across farmland from SH1 north of Taihape.
Hunting is available to be done in this area.
